about the person

My name is Lucy Irving and I am a student at the University of Brighton (City College Campus) in my final year of doing a BA (Hons) degree in Digital Media Design.
To complete a module on this course we were asked to choose a brief from the D&AD Student Awards micro-site, complete this brief and enter our response to the brief into the awards. After careful consideration of the incredibly varied briefs on offer I chose to complete the photography brief.
Why photography?
I have always had an interest in photography but have not had a chance to practice my skills properly for several years since completing a module in photography on my Foundation Degree in Interactive New Media at Farnborough College of Technology.
I am also interested in the digital manipulation of photography, especially as discussed by Lev Manovich in his essay The Paradoxes of Digital Photography, in which he explores the cultural perceptions of photography and how there has always been a tradition of impure/reworked photography.
The subject which you are asked to consider in the brief, dementia, has personally affected my life and the lives of people close to me so I had some idea of the way in which I wanted to depict dementia after reading the photography brief. I am also very interested in the complexity and workings of the human brain, and so I found it interesting to research into the disease and how it affects the brain’s normal functions.
I have created this website to showcase my images and rationale in response to the brief and would appreciate any feedback or comments on my response. Please take a look at the brief section of the website to read the D&AD photography brief in full before viewing my response and rationale. Thank you for visiting this website. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.
